Sampdoria Thrash Inter in Copa Italia Semi First Leg
Mourinho'd decision to rest key players ahead of the clash with United backfired as Inter went down 3-0 to Sampdoria in the first leg of the Copa Italia semifinal.
Sampdoria dismantled Serie A league leader Inter Milan 3-0 Wednesday in their Italian Cup semifinal first leg.

Mourinho rested Zlatan, Chivu and goalkeeper Cesar. And Paid the price as his second stream collapsed.

Antonio Cassano opened the scoring in the ninth minute after disastrous error by Colombian defender Nelson Rivas, who had a catastrophic first-half against United before being withdrawn by Mourinho at half-time

Giampaolo Pazzini took the advantage of Inter's loose defense as he headed a corner in on the half hour mark. The former Fiorentina forward grabbed a second on 42 minutes when Inter again failed to clear a ball in the box.

But Sampdoria lost defender Daniele Gastaldello to a second yellow card on the hour, yet Inter couldn't take advantage of it.

The rain swept Genoa night got worse for Inter when striker Mario Balotelli was carried off on a stretcher after collapsing in the middle of the pitch having collided with the post minutes earlier.

Lazio beat Juventus 2-1 at home in Tuesday's semifinal first leg with the second legs taking place in April.

Mourinho will not consider this great preparation as he readies his team for a visit to Old Trafford. His team was outplayed in the first leg but Inter got away with a draw.

Since then they have conceded 6 goals, drawn 1 and lost 1 and lost Balotelli to injury.

Mourinho, who also the subject of disciplinary proceedings after making inflammatory remarks following the draw with Roma, took defeat in his stride.

"We conceded a ludicrous first goal and a second off a rebound," said the Portuguese. "When not everybody is there (as in first choice players), the team is obviously not of the same calibre."

"But I decided I had to make changes because it is not humanly possible for them to play every match."
