Wenger has lost Mathieu Flamini to AC Milan and is assessing his options for a defensive midfielder to partner Cesc Fabregas, with Gilberto Silva or Denilson ready-made replacements and Djourou prepared to push further up the field if required.

A centre-back by trade, Djourou spent several months at Birmingham on loan last season and is determined to fight for a starting place at the Emirates Stadium.

"Playing in front of the defence is the position where my qualities are expressed best," Djourou, 21, told Tribune de Geneve.

"Arsene Wenger says this to me too. Unfortunately, we do not play a system which enables me to hold this spot, like Claude Makelele does with Chelsea.

"I have not had many possibilities of showing my midfield capabilities. I hope my chance will come in the next few years."
