21 Oct 09- A Week Of Upsets!
Wed, 21 Oct 2009 06:02:16 CDT
What a week it's been for upsets! After seasons where upsets came once a year for the big teams, this year, they're coming thick and fast, like London buses.

Just when Chelsea looked impregnable, they were dismantled by Villa on set pieces. Liverpool were undone by a beachball, ironically thrown onto the pitch by a Liverpool fan! Man United won at Bolton, but only just as a comfortable win turned into a desperate scramble for points in the end. Arsenal and Spurs were the only top teams to win comfortably. Even challengers Man City slipped up.

Barcelona were held to their first draw this season, as the game at Valencia ended goalless. Even as their rivals Real Madrid were outpunching minnow Valladolid.

In the Serie A - AC Milan recorded a win which almost counts as an upset nowadays. Juventus drew for the second week running, this time against rejuvenated Fiorentina. And Inter Milan thrashed Genoa to cement top place.

If there was need for more drama after that, the Champions League didn't disappoint. Lyon ambushed Liverpool. Alkmaar stole a late point against Arsenal. Rubin Kazan stunned the Nou Camp by beating Barcelona. Debrecen and Fiorentina played a 7 goal thriller. Dynamo Kiev slugged it out with Inter Milan and Rangers managed 2 own goals as they self-destructed specatularly against unfancied Unirea Urziceni.

Tonight, Man United take on CSKA Moscow even as I write this on synthetic turf without their best performers. Giggs, Rooney, Vidic, Evra and Fletcher will all miss out. United will do well to get a point out of this, you feel. Meanwhile AC Milan will take on the Galactico studded Real Madrid.

The world cup qualifying places are now mostly in place. And we can now fortunately look forward to seeing Messi at the world cup as Argentina managed to qualify ahead of Uruguay. The big guns from Europe have lined up. Holland, England, Spain, Germany, Italy, Denmark and surprise package - Slovenia. France and Portugal will be in the playoffs. Ghana and the Ivory Coast have also booked their places.

The quiz for last week on Nicknames was won by Kundan Sinha - congratulations! The current week's quiz is on World Cup Final Games.
